Dog Training

As a boy, Jay fed all the stray cats in the neighborhood, so there were always animals coming around for food. As a teenager, Jay rescued a squirrel monkey from a pet store where he saw it suffering in a cage. Without knowing the rules of operant conditioning and the laws of learning, Jay shaped the monkey to play catch and retrieve objects. (Jay's father, conscious that squirrel monkeys are meant to live in rainforests, converted an extra bathroom in the house and put a timer on the shower to recreate the squirrel monkey's natural habitat.)As he studied to become a master groomer, Jay also worked with his cousin, Dr. Robert Loeb, on a tool to treat animals with skin conditions. Jay joined the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT), attended lectures, and read everything he could about the laws of learning, animal training, and operant conditioning. In 2007, Jay read Don't Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor. Then he read it again and again. What a revelation!Jay first met Karen Pryor at the APDT conference in San Francisco in 2009. At the conference he heard about Karen Pryor Academy. Jay applied for enrollment in the Dog Trainer Program and was accepted. In August 2013, Jay reached his goal, becoming a Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner (KPA CTP). Jay is licensed by the City of New York Department of Health in Animal Care and Handling Techniques.It was his grooming experience that led Jay to begin to break down into more manageable steps behaviors that were difficult for pets. He found that by shaping each step of approaching, mounting, and standing in place on the grooming table led to calmer animals. This has ultimately led Jay to collaborate with KPA faculty member and fellow certified training partner Terrie Hayward, to write their book "GROOMING WITHOUT STRESS! safer, quicker, happier:" his book is available on Amazon, and was a new addition at this year's clicker Expo.Perfect Behavior Dog Training provides dog and puppy training, either in your home or at "day camp."
