Do we really *need* to brush his teeth at home regularly, or is it optional? #teeth

Our dog is around 5 years old, I rarely brush his teeth and we don’t use dental chews.

That’s an excellent question — and the article “Do You Need to Brush Your Dog’s Teeth?” see link: https://allinpets.com/blog/dogs/do-you-need-to-brush-your-dogs-teeth-19/ covers this topic in depth.

Here’s a summary of the key points:

* Oral hygiene matters: Many adult dogs already show signs of periodontal disease — without action, it can lead to pain, tooth loss and even affect internal health (e.g., heart, kidneys).

* Brushing is the most effective home-care tool: While dental chews and additives help, they don’t replace the mechanical action of a brush.

* Timing & frequency: Ideally you introduce brushing early (puppy stage) so the dog gets used to it. For older dogs it’s still worth starting — your consistency counts more than perfection.

* What to use and how: Use a dog-safe toothpaste (human toothpaste can contain harmful ingredients for dogs) and a suitable brush (finger brush or small angled brush). Focus on the outer surfaces of the teeth and where they meet the gum line.

* If brushing isn’t happening: At least aim for dental chews or water additives *and* regular vet checks so plaque and tartar don’t build unchecked.
