King discovered he can open cabinets and now nothing in my kitchen is safe 😭😭

i don't even know where to start with this one. King (maine coon, 3 yrs) figured out HOW TO OPEN CABINET DOORS with his paw and now I come home to find him just casually sitting INSIDE my pantry like he pays rent here 💀 I've tried the little childproof latches but this cat has reverse engineered two different kinds already. he's not even hungry when I find him in there, I genuinely think he just does it because he CAN now. anyone dealt with a cabinet-opening cat before?? asking for the structural integrity of my kitchen at this point lol 😭🐾

This made me laugh out loud. I'd add — beyond the locks, giving him an "approved" cabinet or drawer with safe toys inside sometimes redirects this kind of curiosity-driven behavior, since the actual goal seems to be the challenge/discovery rather than anything inside specifically. Worth a try alongside the magnetic locks.

Seconding the magnetic lock suggestion — childproof latches are designed for toddlers, not animals with this level of problem-solving persistence, and Maine Coons specifically are known for exactly this kind of behavior. The "does it just because he can" instinct is consistent with the breed's documented intelligence and curiosity.

Maine Coons are notoriously dexterous with their paws — this tracks with the breed's general reputation for problem-solving. Magnetic cabinet locks (the kind installed from inside, with a separate magnetic key) tend to outsmart most cats better than simple childproof latches, since there's no visible mechanism for him to study and reverse-engineer. Worth the upgrade given King's track record.

This is peak Maine Coon behavior, Aaliyah — the breed's intelligence has to go somewhere! If you're considering a second cat (good luck) or just want to compare notes with other Maine Coon owners: allinpets.com/pets/cats/maine-coon

"sitting inside my pantry like he pays rent" is the funniest thing I've read all week lmaooo. mochi can barely open a door that's already cracked open so I am simultaneously impressed and terrified for you
