Malinois are not "easy versions" of German Shepherds — stop saying that
Seeing this take everywhere lately and it needs correcting. People keep recommending Malinois to GSD owners as if it's a lateral move. It is not. Blitz needs significantly more daily work than any Shepherd I've owned — 2+ hours of structured activity minimum or the breed finds its own "activities," and you will not like what it picks. This is not a beginner dog. This is not a "slightly more athletic Shepherd." This is a working dog bred for police and military deployment, and most pet homes are not equipped for what that actually means day to day.

This is very helpful for me to read, thank you Derek. I have only owned a Husky so far and I had assumed working breeds were all somewhat similar in their needs. I will remember this distinction if I consider a different breed in the future.
This tracks with what I've seen professionally — Malinois show up disproportionately in behavioral consult caseloads relative to their popularity, almost always tied to under-stimulation rather than "bad temperament." The breed gets blamed for what's actually an owner-environment mismatch. Your post is the kind of thing that should be required reading before anyone buys one.
Correcto. Diablo (GSD) needs structure. Malinois needs structure AND a full-time outlet or it self-destructs. Different animal entirely. People research the wrong things before buying.
Completely agree, and I say this as someone who's worked with both breeds extensively. The drive difference is not incremental, it's categorical. A bored, under-exercised Malinois will manufacture problems that a bored GSD simply won't — more intensity, more persistence, less off-switch. This breed needs a job, not a walk.
