History of the English Bulldog
Britain is the homeland of these dogs. They may have shared ancestry with Celtic watchdogs, Greek Molossians, and Roman Mastiffs.
Back in the 18th century these dogs were used to hunt bears and boars. Later they were accommodated for the bloody sport of bull-baiting, until it was banned.
“Bulldog” and “bullying” indeed originate from the same root and the breed has a longstanding association with anything British - the rowdy part of it, but also grit, pluck and determination. The wartime leader Winston Churchill found quiet satisfaction with being likened to a Bulldog for defying Nazi Germany.
In 1873, this breed was recognized by the Kennel Club (UK), and by the American Kennel Club shortly thereafter. The Bulldog is now a symbol of the Marine Corps.
