Meet the Clever, Foxy, and Curious Pembroke Welsh Corgi Puppies

It’s believed early Cardigan-type dogs were introduced to the British Isles in the 10th century. Their original practical use, be it herding or farming jobs, remains very much unclear.

The Welsh in fact are two breeds: one Pembrokes (from the county of Pembrokeshire, the very word “corgi” meaning “dwarf dog” in Welsh language), a relative of the Spits family of canines. The other is Cardigan Corgis of the Dachshund lineage.

The PWC breed has enjoyed its minute of fame (a century of it, to be exact) thanks to the British Royal family. In 1933, the future King George VI gifted his daughters two Welsh pups. Buckingham Palace has been home to 14 generations of these dogs since.

Whatever the added “royal” PR these lively little herders gained, Corgis have fallen into decline of late among the British public. The other side of the Pond the picture is different. NYC, LA, and San Francisco hold annual “Corgi Meetups” for hundreds of lovers of the breed, owners and dogs to spend the day together and have fun.

In 1934, the Corgis’ pool was separated into two different entities, though the American Kennel Club opted to stick to a single standard. The breed sits 11th in its running popularity ranking (as of 2021).

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a small, affectionate and highly intelligent herding dog. Ever alert and vigilant (thus good as guard- and watchdogs), easy to pick up orders and commands, this breed comes as good companions too. Dog handlers call these little versatile helpers “shepherds in a small package”. Don’t look elsewhere for a loyal, loving housedog if you can meet a Corgi’s need for activity.

A Welsh has these appearance and behavior distinctions and traits:

    • A typical Pembroke is 10-12 inches high, weighting up to 30 pounds for a male (28 for a female).
    • The body is proportionate, of medium length and low-built. The chest is deep, of moderate length. The head resembles that of a fox. The look is interested, clever, but not cunning.
    • The short-legged dog is surprisingly quick.
    • The average life expectancy of a Welsh Corgi is 12-13 years.
    • This dog is closely focused on the owner, following the mood and trying to please wherever possible. The strong bond forms pretty quick. Sociable and curious, a Corgi is never obsessive. It would delicately touch you with its nose or paw rather than speak out. No mental stimulation is required to channel the dog’s significant energy stocks: the inventive thing knows better.
    • A “big boy bark” is retained for use in emergencies only.
    • The dense coat allows the Welsh Corgi to feel comfortable in cold weather. That said, an open-air enclosure is out of the question.
    • This dog shows clever baby-sitter skills or instincts of sorts, playing with a child for hours without getting tired or annoyed, and knowing its limits; it would never harm the young. A Corgi will make friends with a cat or other dog in the house, if there’s one.
    • High intelligence and willingness to train is a given.
    • Even a small apartment will do for this city compact.

What Kind of Health a Pembroke Welsh Corgi Has

Experienced breeders note that the Corgi is overall a robust breed, not burdened with an array of inherited ailments often caused by historical hasty crossing. A potential owner should be aware health concerns exist even with this vigorous, sturdy living lot.

The skeletal system is considered to be the most vulnerable in Pembrokes, due to their peculiar constitution. The phenotype known as chondrodysplasia (CDPA) is responsible for short legs in this dog. Breeds with CDPA are susceptible to intervertebral disc degeneration and chondrodystrophy.

Accurate, thoughtful rearing methods alleviate hip concerns. Moderation in exercise is a must; treat your PWC buddy to meals rich in proteins, calcium and phosphorus.

Pembrokes also carry a mutated gene that causes progressive retinal atrophy. Before buying a Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppy, ask for results of screenings for common eye and heart conditions.

    What Health Tests Are Recommended

To stay on the safe side with any inborn-originated issues, order a full list of medical checks from your breeder before proceeding any further. Key among these would be:

    • CDPA/CDDY (IVDD), for chondrodysplasia, chondrodystrophy and risk of intervertebral disc disease
    • Degenerative myelopathy
    • Lafora epilepsy, applied both to Cardigan and Pembroke Welsh Corgis puppies
    • Malignant hyperthermia
    • VWD type I. Von Willebrand disease
    • XSCID, for severe combined immunodeficiency disease in Cardigans and Pembroke
    • SNP genetic profile
    • Canine herpes virus
    • B- and T-lymphocyte clonality

DNA tests are useful in identifying diseases passing down generation. This is vital in selecting pairs for mating for healthy litters. Carriers of risk-associated genes are thus excluded from further breeding, while core attributes of the breed remain intact.

    Pembroke Welsh Corgi Puppy Price

This devoted, loyal little herder retains huge popularity in America; with significant demand reciprocating in extra supply, a future owner won’t hit the wall finding Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppies for sale at a price he or she can afford. Though local specifics are due to apply, extending your search framework would produce a sea of offerings with conditions likely to suit the most critical-minded bidder.

Bargain to lower estimates. Remember though that five-digit tags are there for a reason: a seasoned breeder has invested a sea of knowledge in the trade, love, time and effort to produce a healthy pup you would love to take home.

Buy a Pembroke Welsh Corgi Puppy from a Breeder

When buying a Pembroke, do a bit of homework to research both the breed and the market. All In Pets offer a wide pool of PWCs sourced from established kennels, breeders close by and afar, and one-time sellers offering redundant pups from their litters.

Where an extensive choice of “Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppy for sale near me” is presented, making a choice may not be that easy.

Examine buyers’ profile, and feedback for clues. Ask as many questions as you like to be sure you’re getting the dog as advertised. Selecting an established producer with a proven track record over a one-time seller is advised, since this kennel would in all likelihood employ trusted, industry-approved breeding techniques. Order a list of vaccinations and check-ups completed.

Open your doors to a new member of your family in a loyal, funny friend and playmate, an impeccable Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppy!
