A water-loving breed and the mosquito conversation that comes with island living

Kai spends a good chunk of most days swimming, ocean when we're lucky, a pond nearby otherwise, true to everything this breed's built for. Vet pointed out that all that time near standing and slow-moving water is exactly the kind of exposure that makes prevention non-negotiable here, aloha or not, the mosquitoes do not care how nice the water looks. Staying consistent with him year round given how much time he spends near it.

Sounds like Kai's living the absolute dream out there. Good on you for staying on top of prevention even with all that fun going on.

Never thought about how much a dog's favorite activity could change their actual risk level, that's a smart connection to make. Listing page here for anyone considering a Newfoundland: https://allinpets.com/pets/dogs/newfoundland/

Water-loving breeds really do carry extra exposure just from where they spend their time, good call staying consistent with him. There's a solid piece on why this matters that covers it well: https://allinpets.com/blog/dogs/heartworm-prevention-for-dogs-doses-testing-and-treatment-63/
