Diablo turned 5 — five things I would tell myself at year one

Diablo es cinco años ahora. Looking back at year one with him, here is what I wish someone told me directly instead of letting me learn slowly. One: socialization window closes fast, do not wait. Two: GSDs shed constantly, accept this now, save yourself the frustration later. Three: mental work matters as much as physical, bored GSD is destructive GSD. Four: structure from day one, no exceptions, dogs this smart find every inconsistency and use it. Five: the work pays off completely by year two if you do not cut corners. No regrets, but wish it had been faster getting there.

Five years in and still sharing lessons — this is exactly what the forum is for, Carlos. For anyone considering a German Shepherd, our breed coverage and current listings are here: allinpets.com/pets/dogs/german-shepherd

Thank you for sharing this, Carlos. I am still learning with Storm and seeing a list like this from someone five years in is very useful. The point about consistency from day one is something I will try to apply now rather than later.

Point one on the socialization window deserves to be highlighted every single time this comes up — it is the most common and most costly mistake I see in new working-breed owners, and the consequences show up months later when it is much harder to fix.

Strong list, Carlos, and accurate on every point. The shedding one especially catches new owners off guard — people research temperament and training needs but somehow miss the grooming reality entirely. Zeus needed a serious deshedding routine from month one or the house simply did not function.

Agree completely on point three. Bored intelligent dogs are the most destructive category, full stop. Glad to see this written plainly for newer GSD owners to find before they make the same mistakes.
