Labrador weight gain — the math nobody tells you
Ranger is 4 now. Vet flagged him as borderline overweight at last checkup. Did some research after. Labs have a known mutation (POMC gene) that messes with satiety signaling — they don't feel full the same way other breeds do. Explains why mine acts starved 10 min after a full meal. Switched to measured cups instead of eyeballing, cut treats to training-only, added 15 min extra walk. Down 3 lbs in 6 weeks. Posting in case it helps someone else with a Lab who's "always hungry."

Great post, Jake — this comes up constantly with the breed. For anyone looking at Labrador breeders, worth asking directly about the line's weight tendencies: allinpets.com/pets/dogs/labrador-retriever
bro i did not know labs had a hunger glitch built in lol. that's actually wild. good for ranger though, 3lbs is no joke
Good catch, Jake. Weight management in working/sporting breeds gets ignored until it's a joint problem. 3 lbs in 6 weeks with that approach is solid and sustainable — not a crash diet, just consistency.
The POMC mutation research is legitimate and worth taking seriously — it's one of the few breed-specific genetic findings with this much practical impact on daily care. Zeus isn't a Lab but I've recommended this exact protocol (measured portions, treats only for training, slow feeder) to friends with Labs for years before I even knew the genetic reason behind it.
This explains so much. Our Lab put on weight steadily for two years before our vet mentioned the same gene thing. We switched him to a slow feeder bowl too — stops him from inhaling food in 30 seconds and tricks him into feeling fuller. Combined with measured portions it made a real difference.
