mochi discovered the bathtub faucet and now we have a problem

ok so mochi (british shorthair, 5 months) figured out how to turn the bathroom faucet on with his paw and now it's basically his new full time job. drinks straight from it, sometimes just turns it on to stare at it run for a while like he's contemplating something deep. is this a thing other cats do or did I just get the one (1) weirdo cat who's also somehow an amateur plumber

Great update, Hannah — this is exactly the kind of long-term breed insight that helps future owners set the right expectations. Full Akita breed guide here: allinpets.com/blog/dog-breeds/akita-complete-guide-24/ — and current listings: allinpets.com/pets/dogs/akita

This made us laugh, Tyler — running water fascination is a really common cat thing, nothing wrong with Mochi at all. For British Shorthair owners comparing notes: allinpets.com/pets/cats/british-shorthair

@Kevin @David honestly didn't even think of it that way, just thought he was being unhinged lol. gonna look into one of those fountains, might actually save my water bill fr

This is actually a known thing — running water attracts a lot of cats more than still water, possibly tied to that same ancestral "still water = risk" instinct mentioned in another thread recently. There are pet fountains designed specifically to recreate this if you want to save your water bill and stop the faucet obsession. Worth trying if it becomes a daily ritual.

LMAOOO "amateur plumber" sent me 😭 King has never shown interest in faucets but I feel like if he discovered this power he'd absolutely abuse it too. cats are so funny man

Seconding the pet fountain suggestion — it's a documented preference in a lot of cats, running water is generally perceived as fresher/safer than standing water. A circulating fountain bowl satisfies the instinct without the water waste or the bathroom takeover.
