New Beagle owner here — is the howling normal or did I get a defective dog lol
Hey everyone! Brand new here, just got Scout three weeks ago, he's a Beagle, 3 months old, and I am LOVING this dog but I need to ask something before I lose my mind 😅 — does he have to HOWL every single time a siren passes, another dog barks two blocks away, or literally the doorbell rings? My neighbor already gave me a look. I read Beagles are vocal but this feels like next level. Is this just baseline Beagle or did I somehow get the loudest one in the litter?? Any tips from experienced Beagle people would mean the world, I really want to get ahead of this before it becomes a bigger problem.

lmaooo the neighbor look is so real. my buddy's beagle howls at literally the mail truck every single day at the same time, dog has a built in clock. you're not alone in this Ethan
Confirmed normal. Don't punish the howl itself — it's instinct, not defiance. Redirect with a command, reward the redirect. Consistency now saves you years of frustration later.
Bob is right, and I'd add — this is the time to start working on a "quiet" cue, not later. Reward Scout the instant he stops howling after a trigger, even for a second or two of silence, rather than waiting for full quiet. Beagles respond well to this because they're highly food-motivated. The earlier you start, the more it generalizes as he matures.
Welcome to the club, Ethan. The answer is: this is baseline Beagle, not a defective unit. Duke did the exact same thing at that age and, eight years later, still does it on occasion, though far less. What you're hearing is the breed's scent-and-sound hound heritage doing exactly what it was bred to do — alert loudly to anything unusual. It moderates with age and consistent redirection, but it never fully disappears. You did not get a broken dog. You got a Beagle.
Classic Beagle, Ethan — welcome aboard. That howling is pure scent-hound wiring, and we break down exactly what to expect from the breed (vocalizing included) in our full Beagle guide: allinpets.com/blog/dog-breeds/beagle-temperament-training-care-25/. Worth a read before you tackle the "quiet" training the others mentioned. And if you ever want to connect with other Beagle people or browse the breed: allinpets.com/pets/dogs/beagle/
