8 years with a Beagle — what I've learned
Duke turned eight years old last Thursday. I brought him home as a ten-week-old puppy and I can say without reservation that he has been the most consistent presence in my life over that period — more reliable, in many ways, than most people I know.
I want to share a few things I have learned over eight years with a Beagle that I wish someone had told me at the beginning. First: the nose is not a quirk, it is the dog. Everything Duke does is organized around scent. Second: Beagles are not stubborn — they are simply motivated by different things than you expect. Find the right treat and the right moment, and they are remarkably trainable. Third: they do not do well alone. Duke spent two hours in the backyard last summer while I ran errands and the neighbors filed a noise complaint. Plan accordingly.

The pack-animal point is interesting from a tech angle — there are now dedicated pet cameras with two-way audio and treat dispensers that help a lot with dogs who struggle alone. Furbo is the most popular one. Some owners report that being able to talk to their dog remotely during the day noticeably reduces stress barking. Might be worth trying for Duke if you haven't already.

Beagles were bred to work in packs, so solitary confinement — even for a few hours — triggers genuine distress rather than behavioral acting out. The distinction matters for treatment. Has Duke ever been assessed for clinical separation anxiety, or has it been manageable through routine and enrichment?
This is such a beautiful post, Bob. Eight years! Honey just turned five and I already can't imagine life before her. The point about Beagles being nose-driven first is so true of all scent hounds — once I understood that Honey wasn't ignoring me on walks, she was just processing a world I can't even perceive, walks became so much more enjoyable.
