Annual heartworm test, not just a formality before renewing the prescription

Took Enzo in for his yearly test before renewing his prevention and the vet actually walked me through why it matters even on a dog that's never missed a dose, apparently catching a rare breakthrough case early makes a real difference in treatment options. We do a lot of trail miles together up here so I want to stay on top of anything mosquito-related given how much time he spends outside. Anyone else treat the annual test as optional, or has everyone already learned not to skip it.

This is a great reminder honestly, easy to get complacent when a dog's never missed a dose. Sounds like you and Enzo have a solid routine going though

Active, high-mileage dogs especially benefit from staying strict about this, more outdoor exposure time overall. If anyone's curious about the breed, listing page here: https://allinpets.com/pets/dogs/poodle/

Never skip it, even a consistent dog can have a rare breakthrough and catching it early changes the whole treatment picture. Good detailed piece on exactly why annual testing matters: https://allinpets.com/blog/dogs/heartworm-prevention-for-dogs-doses-testing-and-treatment-63/
