Husky puppy and Texas heat — is this a mistake?
Hello everyone. I am writing because I am having some doubts and I hope this is an appropriate place to share them. I brought Storm home six weeks ago — he is a Husky puppy, 3 months old now. I live in Dallas and people keep telling me that a Husky in Texas is a mistake. The temperature outside is already 95°F some days and Storm seems… fine? He stays inside with air conditioning most of the time. He gets walks early morning and after sunset. But I am reading different things online and I am not sure what to believe. Is this manageable or have I made an error in judgment? I appreciate any honest response.

I think what you're doing sounds really thoughtful, Omar. I maybe wouldn't stress too much about what other people say — I think the fact that you're asking these questions at all means you're already taking it seriously. One thing I've read is that kiddie pools in the yard can be helpful on very hot evenings, though I'm not sure how Storm would feel about water. Some Huskies love it!

We hear this a lot with certain breeds and certain climates. Honestly the breed matters less than the owner's commitment. We've seen Labs struggle in mild weather with negligent owners and Huskies thrive in Phoenix with careful ones. Your routine already sounds more thoughtful than most. Just keep tabs on panting, drooling, and gum color — those are the early warning signs of heat stress.
Derek is right about the coat. The double coat is a thermoregulation system — it works in both directions, insulating against cold AND heat. Shaving it disrupts that entirely and can cause permanent coat damage. Your early morning / after sunset schedule is exactly right. The main additional concern with Huskies specifically is mental stimulation — they're working dogs and will develop destructive behavior if they can't burn energy. Consider indoor enrichment on days when it's too hot to walk.
You haven't made a mistake — you've made a commitment. Husky in Texas is 100% workable IF you are disciplined. No outdoor time between 9am and 8pm in summer. Full stop. AC at all times. Never shave the double coat — that's the most common error people make, thinking it helps with heat. It actually destroys the insulation system. Blitz lived in Arizona for two years. He was fine. Your routine sounds correct.
