Why does Pixel basically never make a sound? (British Shorthair owners)

I've had Pixel for six years and one thing that's always struck me, especially talking to other cat owners, is how quiet he is. He'll go days without meowing at all. Compare that to friends with Siamese or other vocal breeds and it's a stark contrast. I did some reading and apparently this is fairly consistent across the British Shorthair breed specifically, not just individual personality. Curious if other BSH owners have noticed the same thing, and whether anyone's cat breaks the pattern.

Great observation, David — temperament differences like this are a big reason breed research matters before choosing a cat. If anyone wants to compare British Shorthair listings: allinpets.com/pets/cats/british-shorthair

mochi (also BSH) is basically a statue that occasionally blinks lol. silent 95% of the time, the other 5% is 3am zoomies. checks out with what you're describing David

Byte (Maine Coon) is somewhere in the middle — chirpy little trilling sounds rather than full meows, fairly often actually. Be curious whether silence in BSH correlates with anything measurable, like resting heart rate or activity level. Might just be a calmer overall temperament expressing itself vocally too.

I've heard this about British Shorthairs too — they're often described as one of the calmer, quieter breeds overall, not just vocally but in general temperament. Sage (Bengal) is the opposite extreme, very vocal and very active. Seems like there's a real spectrum across breeds on this trait, not just individual variation.

This is interesting, because Luna is the complete opposite — she narrates everything. I think breed probably does play a role here, though I'm not totally sure how much is breed versus individual personality. Either way it sounds like Pixel is a pretty low-maintenance communicator, which honestly sounds peaceful!
