French Bulldog and summer heat — what actually works

NACHO ALMOST GAVE ME A HEART ATTACK YESTERDAY!! It was 91℉ in Miami and he starter wheezing way more than usual just after 10 minutes outside. Rushed him inside, AC on, cold water — he was fine in 20 min but WOW. Frenchie owners — what do you actually do in summer?? Cooling mats? Early morning walks only?? Tell me everything!! This little guy is my whole world and I am NOT taking chances!!

Glad Nacho is okay! If anyone needs a vet, mobile groomer, or pet sitter in the Miami area, you can browse local service listings here: allinpets.com/services

Got a Govee temp/humidity sensor for $18 — tracks indoor vs outdoor in real time via app. Also have a smart plug on the AC that kicks on automatically above 78℉. Low effort, high peace of mind for flat-faced breeds.

We use wet towels on the belly for Buster on hot days — works on road trips too. For a Frenchie I’d skip the pool but a cool damp cloth on the chest and paws makes a real difference. Practical and cheap.

What you described — increased respiratory effort after brief heat exposure — is an early sign of heat stress in brachycephalic breeds. Their shortened airways make thermoregulation significantly harder. I’d recommend discussing a baseline respiratory assessment with your vet before next summer so you have a reference point for Nacho’s normal breathing rate.

As a French Bulldog breeder I tell every buyer the same thing: brachycephalic dogs should never be walked between 10am and 6pm in summer. Period. Cooling mat, frozen lick mat, walks before 8am or after 8pm. Coco doesn’t go outside at midday from June through September. Non-negotiable.
